Working through the night, Murdoch (using his keen ear for pitch and logic) and Pendrick isolated the tampered frames in the FLAC data. They reconstructed the original audio—which, in its pure form, revealed a confession from the future spy.

Later, in the station house, Dr. Julia Ogden found Murdoch listening to a wax cylinder of a Mozart sonata.

“Pendrick?” Murdoch said, revolver drawn.

“George, what is ‘FLAC’?”

“Still thinking about season 16?” she asked.

The tampering stopped. As dawn broke, Pendrick destroyed the time-phone. “Too dangerous,” he admitted.

He pressed a lever. A crisp, warm voice filled the room—unlike any phonograph recording. It was Murdoch’s own voice, but older, speaking lines he’d never written: “The killer used ultrasonic frequencies embedded in a wax cylinder.
