Why it happens: That plugged, muffled, or "underwater" feeling happens due to airplane ear (ear barotrauma). During descent, rapid air pressure changes cause your Eustachian tubes—which connect your middle ear to the back of your throat—to collapse or get blocked, trapping air inside.
