How To Format A Drive Windows 10 May 2026

If Windows won’t let you format a drive, check that you have write permissions and that the drive isn’t write-protected (some USB sticks have a physical switch). For a drive that doesn’t appear, you may need to initialize it first in Disk Management.

Formatting a drive erases all data on it and sets up a file system so Windows can read and write to it. This is useful for a clean installation of Windows, wiping a used drive, or changing a drive’s file system (e.g., from FAT32 to NTFS).
