The engine growled, a low, guttural sound that didn’t belong in the sleepy cul-de-sac of Raven Brooks. Nicky tightened his grip on the wheel—a rusty steering column he’d jury-rigged from a lawnmower and the neighbor’s own abandoned sedan.
A line of bear traps stretched across the road. Too late to stop. Nicky yanked the wheel. The car fishtailed, mounted a sidewalk, and smashed through the front window of the abandoned convenience store. Glass exploded. The engine died.
Silence.

And smiled.
