“Cancel the chard order,” she said, her voice flat and cold as a freezer door. “We’re keeping the cavolo nero. And tomorrow, I’m reworking the entire menu. From scratch.”

The office was a cramped, windowless closet behind the wine cellar, but it was hers. She shut the door, leaned against the cool metal, and let the mask fall. At thirty-four, Rachael Cavalli had everything she’d starved for: two Michelin stars, a reality show cameo, a cookbook deal. But her reflection in the dark monitor showed a woman with tired eyes and a persistent wince.

Marco’s eyebrows rose. “Chef, the prep schedule—”

The heartburn had started three months ago, the same week her ex-husband, Luca, opened Fuoco across town.

Rachael’s jaw tightened. The heartburn roared into a full, greasy blaze.

She’d kept the restaurant. He’d taken their signature recipe for ragù di cinghiale —wild boar stew—and used it as the cornerstone of Fuoco’s menu. Her own recipe, slow-simmered for three days, now served on his plates. The betrayal was a constant, bitter reflux.

But then, something shifted. The pain clarified. It wasn’t just heartburn. It was a warning.
