In 1914, Karen Blixen married her cousin, Bror Blixen-Finecke, a Swedish aristocrat. The couple moved to Kenya, where they established a coffee farm, , near Lake Nairobi. The farm became a successful venture, but the marriage was not a happy one, and they eventually divorced in 1925.

Born on April 17, 1885, in Rungsted, Denmark, Karen Blixen was the daughter of Wilhelm Dinesen, a writer and army officer, and his wife, Ingeborg Westenholz Dinesen.
