He looked at the sunrise bleeding over the iron-gray water.

The lead soldier lowered his rifle. “What do you want?”

His trembling fingers clicked. The screen flickered, then showed a real-time satellite map of the island. Red blips—Soviet hardliners. Blue—NATO defectors. And in the corner, a timer:

He crawled through the marsh, dragging a dead comrade’s backpack—inside, a ruggedized military laptop. On its cracked screen, a blinking icon:

“They’re blaming the Americans,” whispered a voice from the laptop. A woman’s face appeared—Captain Miller, CIA, declared KIA two days ago. “This isn’t a simulation, Sergeant. We built the game as a dead man’s switch. Play it, and you change the war.”
