But when he stepped from behind the console to co-found with manager/lyricist Eric Woolfson, he created a distinct universe: albums built around single, often eerie, concepts—Edgar Allan Poe, gambling, robots, the fear of flying—wrapped in airtight arrangements and Woolfson’s plaintive, theatrical vocals.
